Elementary School #51
Douglas County School District
Douglas County School District’s Elementary School #51 in Sterling Ranch is the first public school in this growing neighborhood and the District’s first new elementary school in over a decade. The 91,000-square-foot school will serve preschool through fifth grade, with space for up to 750 students and 100 staff. From the earliest stages, the District, community, and future users were central to shaping the design. The building responds to a challenging site with a 50-foot grade change, prioritizing safety, clear circulation, and a welcoming sense of arrival. Classrooms, shared learning spaces, the gymnasium, and commons were carefully planned to reflect the needs of students, staff, and families while supporting community use.
The Inspiration
The design of Elementary School #51 was guided by a desire to create intuitive, supportive, and engaging spaces for learners of all ages. A key feature is the gradient of light classroom wayfinding concept. Classroom neighborhoods are organized by subtle shifts in color inspired by daylight, helping students understand and navigate their environment while reinforcing a sense of progression throughout the building. Natural elements, durable materials, and thoughtfully designed features like acoustic baffles, wall graphics, and forest-inspired motifs create an environment that feels calm, cohesive, and connected to nature. Interior spaces such as the media center and team centers extend these ideas, combining light, color, and texture to support both focused learning and collaboration.
The Impact
Elementary School #51 provides both educational and community benefits in a neighborhood that previously had limited access to schools or shared public spaces. Outdoor fields, playgrounds, and gathering areas are intentionally open and accessible to families, while indoor spaces like the oversized commons, media center, and competition-size gymnasium support school programs and community events. The school serves as a hub for learning, play, and connection, fostering a sense of belonging for students and families while offering a flexible space for future growth in Sterling Ranch. By responding directly to District and community input, the school creates a lasting resource shaped by listening, collaboration, and a clear understanding of the neighborhood it serves.
